Garage Gym Planner — Design Your Space

Map out your home gym layout before you buy. Use the guidelines below to plan your space.

Step 1: Measure Your Space

Grab a tape measure and record your room dimensions (length × width). Don’t forget ceiling height — most power racks need 84-90 inches minimum. Measure doorways and any obstacles (water heaters, pillars, windows).

Step 2: Equipment Footprints

EquipmentTypical FootprintClearance Needed
Power Rack (4-post)4′ × 4′+3′ front for loading, +2′ sides
Squat Stand4′ × 3′+3′ front, +2′ sides
Adjustable Bench5′ × 2′+3′ around for movement
Cable Machine4′ × 3.5′+2′ front clearance
Deadlift Platform8′ × 4′None — stand on it
Cardio Machine6′ × 3′Varies by type

Step 3: Sample Layouts

Small Space (8′ × 10′)

  • One wall: compact squat stand against the wall, bench in front
  • Opposite wall: plate tree + adjustable dumbbells
  • Floor: 3-4 stall mats (cover the entire floor)
  • Total equipment: squat stand, barbell, plates, adjustable bench, adjustable dumbbells

Single Garage Bay (12′ × 12′)

  • Back wall: 4-post power rack centered, plate storage on rack
  • Side wall: cable machine or functional trainer
  • Center: deadlift platform in front of rack
  • Floor: full stall mat coverage
  • Total equipment: power rack, barbell, plates, adjustable bench, cable machine, dumbbells

Two-Car Garage (20′ × 20′)

  • Half the garage: gym zone with full rubber flooring
  • Rack against back wall, cable machine on side, deadlift platform center
  • Cardio equipment along the opposite wall
  • Dumbbell rack + kettlebell area in the corner

Step 4: Key Measurements to Remember

  • Ceiling height: 84″ minimum for most racks, 90″+ ideal for overhead press and pull-ups
  • Bar clearance: A standard barbell is 7.2′ long — you need at least 8′ of width to load plates comfortably
  • Deadlift space: 4′ × 8′ platform plus 2′ clearance on all sides
  • Doorway width: Check that your rack and bench can fit through doors during assembly
